Mark Twain

1835 - 1910

Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in Florida, Missouri. He first worked as a printer, before becoming a river-boat pilot on the Mississippi. He took his pseudonym from a well known call of river-boat men sounding the river in shallow places.

His two greatest masterpieces are Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures Huckleberry Finn. Both drawn from his childhood experiences. Other favorites are A Tramp Abroad and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Some of his subject matter may seem dated today, but his greatest work is not only still funny, but also gives us a graphic picture of 19th-century America.
